If you've ever wondered whether you can use a CR2032 battery in place of a CR2025, you're not alone. Both are popular lithium coin cell batteries with similar voltages...
Both CR2032 and CR2025 are 3V lithium coin cell batteries with 20mm diameter, making them appear interchangeable at first glance. However, the key difference lies in their thickness and capacity.
Physical Differences
The CR2032 is 3.2mm thick while the CR2025 is 2.5mm thick—a difference of 0.7mm. This may seem small, but battery compartments are designed with precise tolerances. The CR2032 has a higher capacity of approximately 220mAh compared to the CR2025's 160mAh.
Can You Substitute?
CR2032 in a CR2025 slot: Usually not recommended. The extra thickness may prevent the battery cover from closing properly or put pressure on internal components. In some devices with spring contacts, it might work but could cause damage over time.
CR2025 in a CR2032 slot: This works more often since the battery is thinner. However, the reduced capacity means shorter battery life, and loose contact may cause intermittent power issues.
Common Applications
Both batteries power similar devices: computer motherboards (CMOS), watches, calculators, car key fobs, medical devices, and small electronics. Always check your device manual for the correct battery specification.
Safety Considerations
Never force a battery into a compartment. If the fit is too tight, you risk damaging the device or the battery. Lithium batteries can be dangerous if punctured or short-circuited.
Recommendations
Always use the exact battery type specified by the manufacturer. If you must substitute temporarily, CR2025 in a CR2032 slot is safer than the reverse. For critical applications like medical devices, never substitute.
